What is hardcore waste, and can it go into a skip?

A skip is commonplace on any construction site, used for a range of waste materials generated by building work. Whilst there are a lot of things that can go into a skip, there is also a list of things that can’t. For some helpful hints on what can and can’t go into a skip, check out our guide to choosing the right skip. But what is hardcore waste and can it go into a skip?

What is hardcore waste?

Hardcore is used in the construction industry and a term used to describe a mass of combined solids. These include materials with low absorbency such as:

  • Bricks
  • Tiles
  • Crushed rock
  • Gravel
  • Concrete
  • Rubble

Hardcore is used as the base for heavy load bearing floors. Its low absorbency qualities offer an air circulated and well drained foundation for garages, driveways and roads.

Now we know the basics, can hardcore waste go into a skip?

The simple answer is yes.

Hardcore waste can be recycled and reused in the construction industry.

Once the skip has been collected, when at the waste station, the contents are separated from other materials and crushed to allow it to be used in further groundwork foundations.

Did you know…

The construction industry alone uses approximately 400 million tonnes of materials every year! This results in 100 million tonnes of waste!

With that thought provoking stat, recycling materials used in construction are paramount with a host of benefits.

The main benefits of recycled construction materials

Cost effective

As expected, using recycled materials is cheaper. Recycling more materials saves the cost of sending to landfill. The key is recycle, and use recycled.

Durable and versatile

Recycled construction materials retain all their durability and versatility.

Environmentally friendly

It’s no secret the strain on the amount of waste sent to landfill. Diverting construction waste that is easily recyclable is considered to be a ‘green’ material.
